green energy

The Green Energy Production for bio-based & compostable packaging production project is developed by PROMATERIS SA (Romania) as a Project Promoter and NORSK ENERGI (Norway) as a Project Partner.

The project

The project offers solutions both to the decarbonization of Promateris and to the environmental issues the world is confronting today, by replacing traditional energy with energy from renewable resources, which will be used in the production process.

The project has successfully facilitated Promateris' transition to green energy by replacing traditional fossil fuel energy with solar energy. With an investment value of approximately 1 million euros, Promateris benefited from a 597,000 euros aid provided by Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway through the EEA and Norwegian financial mechanism 2014-2021. This initiative marks a significant milestone in Promateris' commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint.

This system generates approximately 19% of the company's energy needs, contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions and aiding in the production of packaging with a reduced carbon footprint.

After implementing the photovoltaic system, Promateris achieved the following significant results over a 9-month period:

1. By harnessing solar energy for the production of biodegradable and compostable packaging, the company significantly diminished its reliance on fossil fuel-based energy sources.
2. Within nine months of installation, Promateris achieved a reduction in carbon emissions totaling 510,086 kg, equivalent to the annual emissions of 112.45 cars. This milestone marks a substantial advancement towards the company's decarbonization objectives.
3. The company also achieved a 19% reduction in electricity costs, directly enhancing its financial efficiency.

Packaging with low
carbon footprint

The technical solution proposed within this project enables PROMATERIS to become the first company in Romania and CEE to offer packaging with the lowest carbon footprint in the market.
Besides the high content of renewable resources used in the product manufacturing, as well as the fact that they are biodegradable and compostable, this new generation of packaging will have an even reduced impact on the environment due to the fact that it was produced using renewable energy.
